President's Message by Genie Neukomm Enhance Visibility and Safety with Reflective Addresses While delivery services like Amazon and FedEx excel at finding your door quickly, it is because they have some practice. Our first responders may not have had the same practice. Captain Allred from Fire Station 37 strongly recommends ensuring easy identification of every property at the curb and on the house. This simple measure can save crucial time during emergencies. The curb painting service includes removing any old numbering and replacing it with a reflective address at night and with a consistent design throughout the neighborhood. You can go to www.braeswoodplace.org to order a reflective curb number that provides higher visibility at night. Combat Unreliable Waste and Recycling Schedules Tired of inconsistent waste pick-up services? City Council District C and District K are aware of the issues. Take action: Download HTX Connect for reminders and tracking rescheduled pick-ups. Download the 311 app to your phone. Submit 311 tickets for every missed pick-up as the city administration prioritizes issues based on 311 tickets. We need everyone’s help to bring this issue forward and make reliable waste services a high priority. Remember to place bins on the sidewalk on scheduled days and retrieve them quickly to keep the sidewalks clear. Avoid being skipped by giving bins distance from other bins and cars.
Go Native for Landscaping Restoration As Spring approaches, consider choosing native plants and trees for your landscaping needs as these species thrive in our clay soil, adapting well to typical rainfall and temperatures. Choose genuine organic solutions to landscaping issues, fostering a harmonious coexistence with local ecosystems. Restore the loss of large, mature trees in our streets and backyard canopies by planting native trees. This not only enhances your property value but also provides privacy and numerous other benefits. You can make a positive impact on your environment by opting for native flora! |

Security Update by Mark Potts Safe Driving in School Zones School zone safety is important to remember, especially when children are present. By paying attention to your surroundings and following these helpful recommendations, we can help keep kids safe in school zones. Be on the lookout for signs, signals, crossing guards, and school buses with their lights on. When approaching a school bus, obey the lights and never pass a school bus whose lights are red, or the stop sign is extended. When entering a school zone, always obey the traffic laws, and slow down and watch for crossing guards and obey their signals. Be aware of children near schools, playgrounds, bus stops, sidewalks, crosswalks, in the streets, at corners, or in parking lots. Avoid passing other vehicles while driving in a school zone. Never text while driving, especially in a school zone, avoid using your phone unless it is completely hands-free. Unless licensed to do so, never use handicapped or emergency vehicle lanes or spaces to drop off or load/unload children at school. Watch for children and adults riding bicycles and children/teens walking who appear distracted (looking down) as they may be looking at their phone and may not hear or notice your vehicle. By yielding and giving pedestrians and buses the right of way, we can help do our part to keep yourself and everyone around you safe.

Though the cozy chairs on the porch at 3626 Dumbarton may not get as many users on these cooler days, the beautiful purple kale, colorful pansies, and drift roses provide a friendly welcome. The homeowners, Claire and Greg Bassett, protected some plants, and they know the azaleas, grasses and crape myrtle will be fine when the weather warms. Thanks to their neighbor for spotting these colorful flowers and giving us a recommendation. One of the joys of writing this column is having neighbors suggest neighbors' yards for recognition! | | |

Keep the Street Clear of Cars The number one security issue we encountered last year was cars being burgled. This happened more often if the car was on the street. Please keep cars locked in the garage and on the driveway, especially at night. Please also inform your contractors to keep their vehicles locked with windows up for security. |
|
Watch Your Block and Parks We all know the cars and people that are commonly found on our block and around us. Everyone has their routines and habits. If you see something unusual, reach out to your neighbors and make sure everything is fine. If you believe it is a matter of safety, contact the Constable Patrol or HPD. |
|
Walk and Drive Carefully Please use the sidewalks when out for a stroll. We have them for the safety of all residents/pets. Please drive slowly and carefully and remind your contractors to do the same. A moment of distraction could be tragic on our busy streets. |
